Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (TSS Subclass 482)

This is a temporary visa which allows you to live and work in Australia. You must be sponsored by an employer and you must nominate an occupation on Skilled Occupation List.

Short-term stream

This visa enables employers to address labour shortages by bringing in skilled workers where employers can’t source an appropriately skilled Australian worker.

You can stay for up to 2 years or up to 4 years if an International Trade Obligation (ITO) applies.

You must

  • be nominated to work in an occupation on the list of eligible short-term skilled occupations
  • have at least 2 years relevant work experience in your nominated occupation or a related field
  • have a relevant skills assessmentif this is required for your occupation
  • work only for your sponsor or associated entity, unless you are exempt
  • meet minimum standards of English language proficiency unless you are exempt from needing to show this

Medium-term stream

  • This visa enables employers to address labour shortages by bringing in skilled workers where employers can’t source an appropriately skilled Australian worker.

With this visa, you can

  • work in Australia for up to 4 years
  • study (you won’t receive government assistance)
  • travel to and from Australia as many times as you want while the visa is valid
  • if eligible, apply for permanent residence

You must

  • be nominated to work in an occupation on the list of eligible medium and long-term skilled occupations

How do you apply for a Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (TSS Subclass 482)?

This Visa Application is a 3-step process:

  1. Business Sponsorship Application
    Employer makes an application to be approved as business sponsor with Department of Immigration. An approved business sponsorship is valid for three years.
  2. Nomination Application
    Employer nominates position to be filled and outlines skills and experience required for this position and identifies nominee who will fill this position and lodges a nomination application with Department of Immigration.
  3. Visa Application
    The visa application [nominee] lodges a Subclass 482 visa application and once visa is approved can commence work with business sponsor.
